Methylene chloride (DCM or Dichloromethane) is an organochloride compound with the formula CH2Cl2. This colorless, volatile liquid with a chloroform-like, sweet odour is widely used as a solvent. Although it is not miscible with water, it is polar, and miscible with many organic solvents.

Dichloromethane has the advantages of strong solubility and low toxicity, and is widely used in the production of safety film and polycarbonate. The rest is used as a coating solvent, metal degreaser, aerosol spray, polyurethane foaming agent, release agent, and paint remover.

Dichloromethane is a colorless liquid used as a reaction medium in the pharmaceutical industry to prepare ampicillin, hydroxybenzylpenicillin, and cephalosporin; It is also used as solvent in film production, petroleum dewaxing solvent, aerosol propellant, organic synthetic extractant, foaming agent for polyurethane and other foam plastics production and metal cleaning agent.

Dichloromethane is mainly used in film production and pharmaceutical fields in China. Among them, the consumption used for film production accounts for 50% of the total consumption, pharmaceutical industry accounts for 20% of the total consumption, cleaning agents and chemical industry accounts for 20% of the total consumption, and other aspects account for 10%. Dichloromethane is also used as a refrigerant in industrial refrigeration systems, but it is very harmful and can produce highly toxic phosgene when in contact with open flames or hot objects. Encountering humid air can hydrolyze to produce trace amounts of hydrogen chloride, and light can also promote hydrolysis and enhance the corrosiveness of metals.

Used for grain fumigation and refrigeration of low-pressure refrigerators and air conditioning devices. It is used as auxiliary foaming agent in the production of polyether urethane foam and as foaming agent for extruded polysulfone foam. [4]
