What is Streptomycin Sulphate ?

Streptomycin sulfate is the sulfate form of streptomycin, an antibiotic produced in soil by the actinomyces griseus. Streptomycin is the first chemotherapeutic drug that has a definite effect on tuberculosis. This product must be intramuscularly injected, so its long-term application is limited. Streptomycin is the most effective and least toxic antibiotic obtained from Streptomyces for extra-gastrointestinal application. This product is a bactericide, probably due to its direct effect on bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis, mainly acting on the extracellular (including the cavity) tuberculosis bacillus.

Usage

It is used for the treatment of tuberculosis, infective endocarditis caused by Brucella and non-hemolytic Streptomyces, plague and tularemia, influenzae and gram-negative bacilli.
