The star anise contains volatile oil, which mainly contains anethole, anisaldehyde, p-propenyl phenyl prenyl ether, etc., as well as flavonoids and organic acids. Volatile oil and anethole have a stimulating effect, can promote gastrointestinal peristalsis, relieve abdominal pain, and can increase respiratory secretion for expectorant. The ethanol extract can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, pneumococcus, diphtheria bacillus, Escherichia coli, typhoid and paratyphoid bacillus, dysentery, etc. in the test tube, and also has a certain inhibitory effect on fungi. Anethole also has the effect of increasing white blood cells.
