What is Trimethoprim?

Trimethoprim, referred to as TMP, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C14H18N4O3, which is a white or light yellow crystalline powder, odorless and bitter in taste.

Trimethoprim is a bacterial dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor and a sulfonamide synergist. The principle of its antibacterial effect is to interfere with the folic acid metabolism of bacteria. It is mainly to selectively inhibit the activity of bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, so that dihydrofolate cannot be reduced to tetrahydrofolate, thereby inhibiting the growth and reproduction of bacteria.

Trimethoprim is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, used alone for respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections and other diseases, and can be used to treat sepsis, meningitis, otitis media, typhoid fever, shigellosis ( Bacillary dysentery) etc.

Function:

1.It is primarily used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, although it may be used against any susceptible aerobic bacterial species.
2.It may also be used to treat and prevent Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia.
3.It is generally not recommended for the treatment of anaerobic infections such as Clostridium difficile colitis (the leading cause of antibiotic-induced diarrhea).
4.Trimethoprim has been used in trials to treat retinitis.
5.Resistance to trimethoprim is increasing, but it is still a first line antibiotic in many countries.

Application

Use 1: As an antibacterial synergist, it can also treat poultry bacterial infection and coccidiosis.

Use 2: new oral broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs. The antibacterial spectrum is similar to that of sulfanilamide drugs, but the efficacy is stronger, and it is effective against a variety of gram-positive and negative bacteria. Because the bacteria will easily develop resistance to this product, it is not suitable for use as an antimicrobial drug alone. The combination of trimethoprim and sulfanilamide can enhance the antibacterial effect several times to tens of times. The product is mainly used as a synergist of sulfonamide drugs. It is generally used in a ratio of 1:5. It can also be used as a veterinary drug to treat septicemia, white dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera, secondary bacterial infection of respiratory system caused by coliform bacteria in poultry. It can also be used in the treatment of coccidiosis.
