What is Potassium clavulanate?

Potassium clavulanate is a β-lactam antibiotic with enzyme inhibition obtained from the culture medium of roydostreptomycin. It has only weak antibacterial activity and is of no value when used alone. However, it can be firmly combined with most β-lactam enzymes to generate irreversible binding compounds to inhibit the damage of β-lactam enzymes to the antibacterial properties of antibiotics and increase the antibacterial spectrum and efficacy of some antibiotics. Its Chemicalbook broad-spectrum inhibition of β-lactamase not only on staphylococcal enzymes, but also on β-lactamase produced by most G-bacteria, so it is an effective β-lactamase inhibitor. It is often used in combination with penicillin to overcome bacterial resistance and improve curative effect. Function and ApplicationFunction

1. Combination of potassium clavulanate and amoxicil lin is normally used in medicine to treat numerous different infections caused by bacteria, for instance, pneumonia, sinusitis, ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, and skin infections. Potassium clavulanate can also combined with other penicillin-based antibiotics.
2. A -Lactamase inhibitor, typically added to amoxicil lin to increase its effectiveness
3. Clavulanic Acid is a β-lactamase inhibitor, typically added to amoxicil lin to increase its effectiveness.
4. Clavulanic acid is a β-lactam antibiotic produced by several species of Streptomyces. The free acid degrades and is isolated and maintained as either the sodium or potassium salt. Clavulanate is a weak antibiotic, but is a potent inhibitor of β-lactamases. In combination with penicillin and cephalosporins, it shows potent synergistic activity. Clavulanic acid is a suicide inhibitor, covalently binding to a serine residue in the active site of the β-lactamase.
