Physical properties Cyclohexanone is an important raw material for organic synthesis. Its chemical formula is (CH2)5CO. It is a saturated cyclic ketone with the carbonyl carbon atom included in the six-membered ring. It is a colorless, transparent liquid with an earthy smell. When it contains trace amounts of phenol, it has a minty smell. The impurities are light yellow, and the color changes with the storage time due to the generation of impurities. It is water white to grayish yellow with a strong pungent odor. It is slightly soluble in water and miscible in most organic solvents such as alcohol, ether, benzene, acetone, etc. The explosion rate when mixed with air is the same as that of open-chain saturated ketones. Chemical properties Cyclohexanone is flammable and is in danger of causing combustion when exposed to high heat and open flames. It reacts violently when in contact with oxidants. If exposed to high heat, the internal pressure of the container increases, and there is a risk of cracking and explosion. It is the same as open-chain saturated ketones. It can be oxidized with air, oxygen or nitric acid in the presence of a catalyst to produce adipic acid HOOC(CH2)4COOH. Cyclohexanone oxime rearranges to form caprolactam under the action of acid. They are the raw materials for making nylon 66 and nylon 6 respectively. Cyclohexanone is easy to undergo self-condensation reaction in the presence of alkali; it is also easy to react with acetylene. It was first obtained by dry distillation of calcium pimelate. The large-scale production of cyclohexanone is a method of catalytic hydrogenation and then oxidation of phenol. Main uses Cyclohexanone is an important chemical raw material and industrial solvent, and is the main intermediate for the manufacture of nylon, caprolactam and adipic acid. It is also an important industrial solvent, such as paint, especially for those containing nitrocellulose, vinyl chloride polymers and their copolymers or methacrylate polymer paints. It is an excellent solvent for pesticides such as organophosphorus insecticides and many similar ones, used as a solvent for dyes, as a viscous solvent for piston-type aviation lubricants, and a solvent for fats, waxes and rubbers. It is also used as a leveling agent for dyeing and matte silk, a degreasing agent for polishing metal, and wood coloring and painting. Cyclohexanone can be used for film removal, stain removal and spot removal.
