Rifapentine More Info

Rifapentine (also known as Rifapentine) is a long-acting rifamycin-class antibiotic, which is a cyclopentyl derivative of rifamycin. It is primarily used to treat infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other related bacteria. Rifapentine works by inhibiting the β-subunit of the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in susceptible bacteria, thereby suppressing bacterial RNA synthesis and exhibiting a broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity, particularly against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (including Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The uses of Rifapentine mainly include:

In combination with other anti-tuberculosis drugs for the treatment of various types of tuberculosis, including initial and retreatment cases.Suitable for use in directly observed short-course chemotherapy under the supervision of medical personnel.

Also used in the treatment of non-tuberculosis mycobacterial infections.

In combination with other anti-leprosy drugs, it may be effective in the treatment of leprosy.

One of the characteristics of Rifapentine is its long half-life, which allows it to be used in intermittent therapy, potentially improving patient compliance and reducing the development of drug resistance. Additionally, Rifapentine has strong bactericidal activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro, and Mycobacterium leprae and other mycobacteria are also sensitive to this drug. In the treatment of tuberculosis, Rifapentine is often used in combination with other drugs such as isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol to enhance therapeutic efficacy.
