Vitamin A aldehyde, also known as retinal, is the closest component to A acid. It is generated by the oxidation and cleavage of β-carotene. Reduction gives retinol, and oxidation gives retinoic acid. Retinal is the cofactor of rhodopsin. 11-cis retinal and visual protein in visual cells form visual pigments. After absorbing light, 11-cis retinal is isomerized to all-trans retinal, which changes the conformation of rhodopsin and initiates nerve impulses to the brain, thus forming vision.
Retinal is an active ingredient for anti-wrinkle, anti-aging, and anti-acne skin care. Studies have shown that compared with other commonly used vitamin A derivatives (such as retinoic acid), retinal is less irritating to the skin and more suitable for sensitive skin. In addition, retinal is converted into retinoic acid after being metabolized by the human body and has the effect of treating acne. It can be said to be a multifunctional active additive. Retinal can be used in various anti-wrinkle, anti-aging and anti-acne skin care product formulas, and the recommended dosage is about 0.05%~0.15%.
