2. Physical and chemical properties

Characteristic: There are two types of color changes with different ranges, one is red yellow thymol blue, and the other is yellow blue thymol blue. Red yellow thymol blue is a brownish green or reddish purple crystalline powder, while yellow blue thymol blue is an amber or orange yellow crystalline powder.

Solubility: Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, dilute alkali solution, and ammonia solution, slightly soluble in benzene.

Melting point: approximately 221 ℃

3. Main purpose

a. Acid-base indicator

Widespread pH indicator: The color range of red yellow thymol blue is pH 1.2-2.8, changing from red to yellow; The color range of yellow blue thymol blue is pH 8.0-9.6, changing from yellow to blue. The pH range of a solution can be roughly determined based on its color change, and is commonly used in acid-base titration experiments to indicate the endpoint of titration.

Mixed indicator: It can be mixed with other indicators such as methyl red to form a mixed indicator, which can more accurately indicate acid-base changes in different pH ranges, making color changes more sensitive and easier to observe.

b. Other applications
