    Manganese Dioxide

    Product Description: Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide for Zinc Carbon Battery Material
    Purity: 98%,99% Min
    Origin: China
    Capacity: 2,500MT/Month, 3000MT/Year

    Manganese dioxide ( MnO2 ) , known as pyrolusite when found in nature , is the most plentiful of all the manganese compounds. MnO2 is Iron-black to dark steel-gray or bluish mineral; black or bluish-black streak; metallic or dull luster. Soluble in hydrochloric acid.

    Manganese dioxide is an important component in batteries. It is also used in glassmaking to remove the green fint caused by iron impurities.

    Main different of manganese dioxide (MnO ₂) and manganese monoxide (MnO) in terms of raw materials, production processes, applications, and storage

    1、 Differences in raw materials
    Category Manganese dioxide (MnO ₂) Manganese monoxide (MnO)
    Natural forms mainly exist in the form of minerals such as pyroxene (β - MnO ₂) and pyroxene, and are widely distributed in nature. There are few natural forms of existence, mostly synthetic products, and natural minerals such as manganese oxide (MnO) have lower content.
    Raw material source: 1. Direct mining of natural manganese ore (such as manganese ore in Guangxi, Hunan and other places);
    2. Recovery of industrial by-products (such as extraction from electrolytic manganese slag). 1. Using manganese salts such as manganese carbonate (MnCO3) and manganese hydroxide (Mn (OH) ₂) as raw materials;
    2. Prepared by reduction of high valence oxides of manganese (such as MnO ₂, Mn ∝ O ₄).
    2、 Comparison of production processes
    Process type Manganese dioxide (MnO ₂) Manganese monoxide (MnO)
    Mainstream preparation method 1. Electrolysis method: Using manganese sulfate solution as raw material, high-purity electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) is generated by electrolytic deposition, which is used in the field of batteries;
    2. Chemical synthesis method: react potassium permanganate (KMnO ₄) with manganese sulfate (MnSO ₄) solution to generate active manganese dioxide (CMD);
    3. Natural mineral processing: After crushing and purifying (such as acid leaching to remove impurities), pyroxene ore is obtained into industrial grade products. 1. Thermal decomposition method: Heat manganese carbonate (MnCO3) to 300-500 ℃ to decompose into MnO and CO ₂;
    2. Reduction method: Use hydrogen (H ₂), carbon (C) and other reducing agents to reduce manganese dioxide or manganese trioxide (Mn ∝ O ₄),
    3. Wet preparation: Manganese salt solution reacts with alkali (such as NaOH) to generate manganese hydroxide precipitate, which is then dehydrated and calcined to obtain MnO.
    The electrolytic method has high purity (≥ 99%) and excellent electrochemical performance; The chemical synthesis method can regulate the crystal structure (such as alpha and beta types) to meet different catalytic requirements. The thermal decomposition method has a simple process, but the purity of the product is affected by the raw materials; The reduction method requires temperature and atmosphere control to avoid excessive reduction.

    4.The core difference between manganese dioxide and manganese monoxide lies in the different valence states of the manganese element (Mn is+4 in MnO ₂ and+2 in MnO), resulting in significant differences in chemical properties and application scenarios: Manganese dioxide has the core advantages of oxidation and catalytic activity, and is widely used in batteries, catalysis, and oxidation treatment; Manganese monoxide is characterized by its reducibility and metal ion properties, and is more commonly used as a material intermediate or additive. When storing, MnO needs to focus on preventing moisture absorption and oxidation, while MnO ₂ has stronger stability and looser storage conditions.
