Product Detail

Nitrapyrin, with the CAS number 1929 - 82 - 4, is chemically named 2 - chloro - 6 - (trichloromethyl)pyridine. Its molecular formula is C6H3Cl4N, and the molecular weight is approximately 230.9.

This compound appears as a white crystalline solid. It has a melting point of 62 - 63℃, and its vapor pressure is 370 mPa at 23℃. Nitrapyrin is hardly soluble in water, with a solubility of only 40 mg/kg in water at 22℃, but it is readily soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, dichloromethane, and xylene.

Nitrapyrin is mainly used as a nitrification inhibitor. When applied together with urea and nitrogen - based fertilizers, it can delay the oxidation of ammonium ions in the soil. By competitively inhibiting ammonia - monooxygenase (AMO), it prevents the oxidation of ammonium - nitrogen to nitrate - nitrogen in the soil. This can reduce the leaching and loss of nitrogen fertilizers, improve the nitrogen - use efficiency of crops, and decrease agricultural nitrogen pollution. It has been widely used as a nitrogen - safety and fertilizer - efficiency - enhancing agent, as well as a soil nitrogen - fertilizer protectant in the United States and Europe.

In addition, Nitrapyrin is also an important intermediate for the synthesis of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other chemical products. It can also be used as a soil fungicide and a wood preservative. However, it should be noted that Nitrapyrin is prone to photolysis, so it is not suitable for surface - application. And in high - organic - matter soils, it is easily adsorbed, which may reduce its effectiveness.
