Physical and chemical properties Highly flammable. Slightly soluble in water; soluble in ethanol and ether. When exposed to oxygen, ethers tend to form unstable peroxides. Ethyl, isobutyl, ethyl tert-butyl and ethyl tert-amyl ethers are particularly dangerous in this regard. Ether peroxides can sometimes be observed depositing on containers or along the surface of liquids in the form of transparent crystals. Chemical properties Colorless liquid. Melting point -92°C, boiling point 93.8°C, relative density 0.7888 (20/4°C), refractive index 1.4026, flash point -9°C. Soluble in alcohol and ether, slightly soluble in water.
Uses This product is used in organic synthesis and can be used for polymerization and copolymerization to produce polyvinyl ethers for coatings, additives, plasticizers, etc. Uses Organic synthesis raw materials, used for polymerization, production of polyvinyl ethers for coatings, adhesives, additives, plasticizers, etc. Uses This product is mainly used in organic synthesis, etc. Production method (1) Obtained by the reaction of acetylene with butanol. This method requires less equipment and has high selectivity. (2) Obtained by the reaction of acetaldehyde and n-butanol. This method of acetal cleavage is also a common process for vinyl ethers. Another newer method is to react alcohol, ethylene and oxygen in the presence of palladium chloride-copper chloride catalyst to obtain vinyl ether. Category Flammable liquid Toxicity classification Low toxicity Acute toxicity Oral-rat LD50: 10000 mg/kg; Inhalation-mouse LC50: 62 g/m3/2 hours Irritation data Skin-rabbit 500 mg mild; Eyes-rabbit 500 mg/24 hours Mild Flammability hazard characteristics Flammable when exposed to open flame, high temperature and oxidant; combustion produces irritating smoke Storage and transportation characteristics Warehouse is ventilated and dry at low temperature; stored separately from oxidants and acids Fire extinguishing agent Dry powder, dry sand, dry stone powder, carbon dioxide, foam Occupational standard STEL 20 mg/m3

    Air and Water Reactions:

Highly flammable. Slightly soluble in water. Ethers tend to form unstable peroxides when exposed to oxygen. Ethyl, isobutyl, ethyl tert-butyl, and ethyl tert-pentyl ether are particularly hazardous in this respect. Ether peroxides can sometimes be observed as clear crystals deposited on containers or along the surface of the liquid.

    Reactive Group:

    Ethers

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Highly Flammable

    Reactivity Profile:

Ethers, such as BUTYL VINYL ETHER can act as bases. They form salts with strong acids and addition complexes with Lewis acids. The complex between diethyl ether and boron trifluoride is an example. Ethers may react violently with strong oxidizing agents. In other reactions, which typically involve the breaking of the carbon-oxygen bond, ethers are relatively inert.

    Peroxide Forming Chemical:

n-Butyl vinyl ether|D: Other compounds that may form peroxides|Kelly|Explosion possible during industrial synthesis. See Bretherick's.|Glikin, M. A. et al., Chem. Abs., 1978, 89, 30115
