3.  Key Properties

Solubility:  Miscible with water. Low solubility in most organic solvents.

Density:  ~1. 3  g/cm³ at 20°C.

pH:  Typically adjusted to  2.0-4.0  for stability.

Boiling Point:  Decomposes before boiling. Distillation not possible.

Flash Point:  >100°C (Not flammable).

Stability:  Stable under acidic conditions (pH 2-9). Degrades under alkaline conditions (pH >9) and at high temperatures (>40°C prolonged exposure). Sensitive to strong reducing agents, nucleophiles (like sulfites, amines), and heavy metals. Light stability is moderate; prolonged exposure should be avoided.

Primary Function:  Broad-spectrum  biocide  and  preservative .

Mode of Action:  Non-oxidizing biocide that disrupts microbial metabolism by reacting with thiol groups in enzymes and proteins.

Target Microorganisms:  Effective against bacteria (Gram+ and Gram-), fungi (yeasts and molds), and algae.

Major Application Areas:

Industrial Water Treatment:  Cooling water systems, papermill process water, metalworking fluids (low-dose maintenance).

Paints & Coatings:  In-can preservation of water-based paints, adhesives, latex emulsions, polymer dispersions.

Home & Personal Care (Severely Restricted):  Historically used in shampoos, liquid soaps, detergents (now largely banned/replaced due to sensitization concerns).

Oilfield:  Preservation of fracturing fluids, drilling muds.

Leather Processing:  Preservation of wet blue and wet white hides.

Pulp & Paper:  Slimicide in papermaking processes.

Household & Institutional Cleaners (Limited):  Preservation of concentrated liquid products (use levels strictly controlled).

5.  Safety & Handling (CRITICAL)

Hazards:

Acute Toxicity:  Harmful if swallowed (H302). Causes severe skin burns and eye damage (H314). Toxic if inhaled (H331). May cause respiratory irritation (H335).

Chronic Toxicity/Sensitization: EXTREME SKIN SENSITIZER (H317).  This is the most significant hazard. Can cause severe allergic contact dermatitis.  Banned in leave-on cosmetic products (EU, Canada, etc.) and severely restricted in rinse-off cosmetics.  Strict occupational exposure limits apply.

Environmental Hazard:  Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H410).

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):  Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile, neoprene), safety goggles/face shield, protective clothing, and respiratory protection (dust mask for powder handling unlikely, but organic vapor cartridge for mist/fumes if risk exists). Use in well-ventilated areas or fume hoods.

First Aid:  Skin contact - Remove contaminated clothing, wash immediately with plenty of water. Eye contact - Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Ingestion - Rinse mouth, do NOT induce vomiting, seek medical attention immediately. Inhalation - Move to fresh air, seek medical attention.

Storage:  Store in a cool (5-30°C), dry, well-ventilated place away from heat, sunlight, strong alkalis, reducing agents, and foodstuffs. Keep container tightly closed. Use corrosion-resistant containers (HDPE, stainless steel).
