      Product Detail

    Manufacturer: Hangzhou Royalchem Co.,LTD.

    Website:  www.cnroyalchem.com

    1. Chemical Identification

    CAS Number:  14434-22-1

    EC Number:  237-081-9

    Synonyms:

    Sodium hexacyanoferrate(II) decahydrate

    Yellow Prussiate of Soda (YPS)

    Tetrasodium hexacyanoferrate decahydrate

    Sodium ferrocyanide, decahydrate

    Molecular Formula:  Na₄[Fe(CN)₆]·10H₂O

    Molecular Weight:  484.06 g/mol

    2. Appearance and Physical Properties

Appearance:  Lemon-yellow to pale yellow crystalline solid.

    Odor:  Odorless.

    Solubility:

Highly soluble in water (~27.2 g/100 mL at 20°C).

Insoluble in most organic solvents (ethanol, diethyl ether).

    Density:  ~1.46 g/cm³

Melting Point:  Decomposes around 81°C (loses water of crystallization).

pH (1% solution):  Neutral to slightly alkaline (~7-8).

    3. Chemical Properties

Hydrate Form:  Contains 10 molecules of water of crystallization.

Stability:  Stable under normal conditions. Decomposes upon heating (>50°C) or strong acidification, releasing toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas.

Key Feature:  The cyanide groups are tightly bound to iron in the ferrocyanide complex ([Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻), making it  much less toxic  than free cyanide ions.

    4 . Applications

    Food Additive (E535):

Anti-caking Agent:  Prevents clumping in table salt, iodized salt, and powdered foods.

Release Agent:  Used in salt licks for livestock.

    Industrial Chemistry:

Precursor:  For manufacturing potassium ferrocyanide, ferric ferrocyanide (Prussian blue pigment), and other ferrocyanides.

Metal Treatment:  In metal surface finishing (e.g., case hardening of steel).

    Chelating Agent:  Binds metal ions.

    Analytical Chemistry:

Reagent for detecting ferric ions (Fe³⁺) and other metal cations.

    Other Uses:

    Photography (historical use).

Animal feed additive (trace mineral carrier).

    5 . Safety & Handling

    GHS Classification (Typical):

    H319:  Causes serious eye irritation.

    H335:  May cause respiratory irritation.

H412:  Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

    Precautionary Statements (P Codes):

P261, P273, P305+P351+P338 (Avoid breathing dust, avoid release to environment, IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously).

    Toxicity:

Low Acute Toxicity (LD50 oral, rat):  ~6400 mg/kg (practically non-toxic).

Cyanide Risk:   Not  acutely toxic under normal conditions due to strong Fe-CN bonds.  Significant HCN release only occurs under STRONG ACID conditions or VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES (>400°C).

    Handling:

    Use with adequate ventilation.

    Avoid dust formation.

    Wear safety glasses and gloves.

    Storage:

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place in tightly closed containers.

Protect from moisture and strong acids.

Disposal:  Dispose of according to local regulations (often as non-hazardous waste, but confirm).

    6 . Regulatory Information

Food Use (E535):  Approved as an anti-caking agent in salt and specific foods by EU, FDA, JECFA, Codex Alimentarius (with strict purity criteria and usage limits).
