    General Introduction to Isopropyl Nitrite
Isopropyl nitrite is an organic compound belonging to the nitrite class. At room temperature, it is usually a colorless or pale yellow volatile liquid with a distinctive fruity aroma. Due to its unique chemical properties, it has specific applications in organic synthesis and history, but it also has high danger and toxicity.
    1. Basic Information
    · Chinese name: Isopropyl Nitrite
    · English name: Isopropyl Nitrite
    · CAS number: 541-42-4
    · Molecular formula: C₃H₇NO₂
    · Structural formula: (CH₃)₂CH-ONO
    · Appearance and odor: Colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid, with a distinctive fruity aroma.
    2. Main Characteristics
    · Physical properties:
    · Boiling point: relatively low, approximately 39-40°C, making it highly volatile.
    · Density: less than that of water.
    · Solubility: slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
    · Chemical properties:
    · Instability: Isopropyl nitroso acid is unstable under the action of light and heat, and is prone to decomposition, generating nitrogen oxides (such as NO, NO₂) and corresponding aldehydes and ketones (such as acetone), etc.
    · General properties of nitroso esters: As a nitroso ester, it can react with amines to form diazonium salts, and then undergo coupling reactions, etc. It is also a mild nitration reagent.
    3. Main Uses
    1. Organic synthesis reagents:
    · In the laboratory, it is used as a nitrosation reagent, especially for the preparation of nitrosamine compounds.
    · Due to its decomposition generating nitric oxide (NO), it is used as a donor of NO in some studies.
    · It can be used in the first step of diazotization reactions.
    2. Historical uses (now strictly prohibited and phased out):
    · Drug abuse ("inhalants", "poppers"): Isopropyl nitrite was abused due to its ability to rapidly dilate blood vessels and relax smooth muscles, being used as an "energizer" or sexual enhancement agent. Inhalation causes temporary head congestion, accelerated heartbeat, and a sense of euphoria, but the risks are extremely high (see safety section).
    4. Safety and Danger (Very Important!)
Isopropyl nitrite is a highly dangerous chemical, and its dangers are mainly manifested in the following aspects:
    · Health hazards:
    · High toxicity: Inhalation, ingestion, or absorption through the skin can all cause poisoning.
    · Hematotoxicity: It can oxidize hemoglobin into methemoglobin, losing its ability to carry oxygen, resulting in tissue hypoxia, cyanosis (skin and mucous membranes turning bluish-purple), and in severe cases, coma and even death.
    · Cardiovascular effects: It strongly dilates blood vessels, causing a sharp drop in blood pressure, severe headache, dizziness, and tachycardia.
    · Irritancy: It has a strong irritating effect on the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.
    · Carcinogenicity: Nitrites can form nitrosamines in the body, and nitrosamines are strong carcinogens.
    · Physical hazards:
    · Extremely flammable: The flash point is extremely low (about -35°C), and its vapor can form an explosive mixture with air. It is highly prone to combustion and explosion upon contact with fire, high heat, or ignition.
    · Explosive risk: It may rapidly decompose when heated, exposed to light, or in contact with impurities, causing an increase in pressure inside the container, with the risk of cracking and explosion.
    5. Storage and Processing
    · Storage: Must be sealed and protected from light. Store in a dust-proof refrigerator in a cool, well-ventilated area (usually refrigeration is required, but be aware that the vapor is still flammable). Keep away from fire sources and heat sources, and store separately from oxidants, acids, and bases.
    · Personal Protection: During operation, appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn, including chemical safety goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and work in a fume hood to ensure good local or overall ventilation.
    · Emergency Response:
    · Inhalation: Quickly leave the scene to an area with fresh air, keep the airway clear, and seek medical attention immediately.
    · Leakage: Quickly evacuate personnel contaminated by the leakage to the upwind area and isolate the area. Strictly restrict access. Cut off the fire source. Emergency response personnel should wear self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus and anti-static clothing. Try to cut off the source of leakage as much as possible.
    6. Regulations and Supervision
Due to its potential for abuse and high risk, isopropyl nitrite is strictly regulated in many countries and regions, and is prohibited from illegal production, sale and use, especially from being circulated as consumer products (such as "poppers").
