    Propyl acetate Use and Manufacturing

    Methods of Manufacturing

    1. from acetic acid and propanol derived esterification. Acetic acid and sulfuric acid, heated to reflux 10h, after cooling with sodium methoxide and to pH = 7-8, after drying in calcium chloride atmospheric fractionation, collection of 105-115 ° C distillate fractions , That is finished.

    2. Refining method: Propyl acetate usually contains water, acetic acid and propanol and other impurities. When the solution is neutralized with sodium carbonate or a saturated solution of sodium carbonate, the mixture is washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate, and then distilled.

    3. Preparation: In a reaction flask equipped with a reflux condenser, 60 g (1.0 mol) of glacial acetic acid, 1-propanol (2) 40 g (0.67 mol), one zeolite, and 2 mL concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction was heated at reflux for 12 h. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was pour into 250 mL of water and saturated with sodium chloride. The upper organic layer was separated and washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution. Anhydrous sodium sulfate drying, distillation, collecting 101 ~ 102 ° C fraction, in propyl acetate (1) in a yield of 53%.

    Uses

Propyl acetate, also known as propyl ethanoate, is a chemical compound used as a solvent and an example of an ester. This clear, colorless liquid is known by its characteristic odor of pears. Due to this fact, it is commonly used in fragrances and as a flavor additive. It is formed by the esterification of acetic acid and 1-propanol (known as a condensation reaction), often via Fischer–Speier esterification, with sulfuric acid as a catalyst and water produced as a byproduct.
