Furantoin (also known as Furantoin or Furazolone) is a nitrofurane antibacterial drug. Its chemical name is 5-(morpholinomethyl)-3-[(5-nitroalkylamino)amino]-2-oxazolidone, with the chemical formula C₁₃H₁₆N₄O₆ and the CAS number 139-91-3.
6 This compound is usually a yellow crystalline powder, with a density of approximately 1.58 g/cm³, a melting point of 206°C (decomposition), and a boiling point of 461.4°C.
Pharmacological Effects and Application History
Furantoin has a broad antibacterial spectrum and can inhibit most Gram-positive bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes) and Gram-negative bacteria (such as Escherichia coli).
Its mechanism of action mainly involves inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial proteins.
Historically, this drug was used to treat intestinal infections, avian mycoplasma diseases (mycoplasma diseases), Salmonella infections, coccidiosis, and turkey blackhead disease.
In veterinary clinical practice, it was administered in specific concentrations either by mixing with drinking water or feed, such as a 400 ppm concentration for treating avian Salmonella infections, and a 263 ppm concentration for treating avian mycoplasma diseases or a 440 ppm concentration for feeding.
