      Product Detail

    1. Anionic Surfactant

Linear alkylbenzenesulfonic acid is classified as a high-performance anionic surfactant . The molecule consists of a hydrophobic linear alkyl chain (typically C10-C13) attached to a hydrophilic benzenesulfonic acid head group. This amphiphilic structure enables the compound to reduce surface tension between liquids and solids, making it an essential active ingredient in cleaning formulations. When neutralized with bases such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, it converts into its corresponding sulfonate salts (LAS), which are the primary workhorses in detergent products worldwide .

    2. Detergent Intermediate

LABSA serves as the key chemical intermediate for producing linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS), which are the most widely used anionic surfactants in household and industrial cleaning products . The compound is supplied as a brown, viscous liquid with 96-98% active matter content . It is typically neutralized on-site by detergent manufacturers to form the active surfactant. This intermediate role is critical because the acid form is more stable and economical for bulk transportation and storage compared to its neutralized salt forms .

    3. Biodegradable Cleaning Agent

Linear alkylbenzenesulfonic acid represents a significant environmental advancement over its predecessor, branched alkylbenzene sulfonate (ABS) . The linear (straight-chain) alkyl structure allows microorganisms to readily degrade the molecule through β-oxidation, a process that sequentially breaks down the alkyl chain. In conventional sewage treatment plants, LAS removal rates reach 95-99% due to aerobic biodegradation . This biodegradability led to the replacement of non-biodegradable branched surfactants in the 1960s, making LABSA the foundation of modern "soft" detergents that do not cause persistent river foaming .
