Norgestrel is a 17-hydroxy steroid, a terminal acetylenic compound and a 3-oxo-Delta(4) steroid.|Norgestrel is synthetic steroidal progestin that is used in combination with ethinyl estradiol for oral contraception. Norgestrel is composed of a racemic mixture of two stereoisomers, dextronorgestrel and levonorgestrel. However, only the levorotary enantiomer ([levonorgestrel]) is biologically active.|A synthetic progestational agent with actions similar to those of PROGESTERONE. This racemic or (+-)-form has about half the potency of the levo form (LEVONORGESTREL).
