  • Description

A colorless, transparent liquid with a strong odor. Water decomposition into hydrogen chloride and boric acid, and release a lot of heat, in the wet air due to hydrolysis and the generation of smoke. Boron trichloride has strong reaction ability, can form a variety of coordination compounds, has high thermodynamic stability, but under the action of discharge, it will decompose into low cost boron chloride. In the atmosphere, boron trichloride heating can react with glass, ceramics, but also can react with many organic compounds to form various organoborate compounds.

    Experimental Properties:

Colorless fuming liquid at low temperature|Decomposed by water and alcohol|Critical volume: 239 cu cm/mol|Reacts with hydrogen at 1200 °C|For more Other Experimental Properties (Complete) data for BORON TRICHLORIDE (10 total), please visit the HSDB record page.

    Air and Water Reactions:

Fumes in air, including moisture in air and soil, to form hydrochloric acid [Merck 11th ed. 1989]. Reacts vigorously with water and forms hydrochloric acid fumes and boric acid. Based on a scenario where the chemical is spilled into an excess of water (at least 5 fold excess of water), half of the maximum theoretical yield of Hydrogen Chloride gas will be created in 0.13 minutes. Experimental details are in the following: "Development of the Table of Initial Isolation and Protective Distances for the 2008 Emergency Response Guidebook", ANL/DIS-09-2, D.F. Brown, H.M. Hartmann, W.A. Freeman, and W.D. Haney, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois, June 2009.

    Reactive Group:

    Halogenating Agents

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Water-Reactive

    Reactivity Profile:

BORON TRICHLORIDE vigorously attacks elastomers and packing materials. Contact with Viton, Tygon, Saran and natural and synthetic rubbers is not recommended. Highly corrosive to most metals in the presence of moisture. Reacts energetically with nitrogen dioxide/dinitrogen tetraoxide, aniline, phosphine, triethylsilane, or fat and grease [Mellor 5:132 1946-47]. Reacts exothermically with chemical bases (examples: amines, amides, inorganic hydroxides).

    Physical Dangers:

The gas is heavier than air.

    Corrosivity:

It is corrosive to metals|Vigorously attacks elastomers and packing materials|Strong irritant to tissue. Fumes are corrosive and toxic

    Heat of Vaporization:

    23.77 kJ/mol at 12.65 °C; 23.1 kJ/mol at 25 °C

    Critical Temperature & Pressure:

    Critical temperature: 455 K (182 °C); Critical pressure: 3.87 MPa (2.90X10+4 mm Hg)
