It is a water-soluble, white powder, stable under physiological conditions. Biochemically, it specifically targets the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding to cardiolipin. It acts as a potent mitoprotective agent, scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), stabilizing mitochondrial structure, inhibiting permeability transition, and reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis.
