Physical Properties

• Appearance: Colorless, transparent oily liquid.
• Odor: Possesses a strong, sweet floral and fruity fragrance, strongly reminiscent of wintergreen oil, ylang-ylang, cherries, and feijoa fruits.
• Melting Point: Approximately -12 °C to -12.8 °C.
• Boiling Point: Around 198–200 °C at standard atmospheric pressure.
• Density: ~1.088–1.09 g/cm³ at room temperature (slightly heavier than water).
• Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, but highly miscible with common organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, diethyl ether, and chloroform.
• Flash Point: Approximately 82.8 °C (closed cup), making it a combustible liquid that requires caution near open flames or high heat.

Chemical Properties

• Reactivity & Ester Characteristics: As an organic ester, it is relatively stable in air but can undergo hydrolysis when heated with alkaline catalysts to yield benzoic acid and methanol. It also readily participates in transesterification reactions with other alcohols to form various benzoate esters.
• Flammability & Thermal Hazards: Combustible. When exposed to open flames, high heat, or strong oxidizing agents, it can ignite and release toxic fumes containing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
• Toxicity & Irritation: Classified as low toxicity, though it is still considered harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Its vapors or mists can cause irritation to the eyes, upper respiratory tract, and skin, and may induce sensitization upon repeated exposure.
