In biomedical research and biochemical assays, it primarily functions as a highly selective enzymatic inhibitor, a surrogate substrate for nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, and a specialized building block for peptide synthesis. 
    1. Selective Alkaline Phosphatase Inhibitor 
    Its most prominent function in classical biochemistry is as a strong, non-competitive inhibitor of specific tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) isoenzymes, specifically those in human bone and liver. 
    • Target Isolation: It exerts virtually no inhibitory effects on intestinal or placental alkaline phosphatases.
    • Experimental Use: This extreme selectivity allows laboratory researchers to isolate, differentiate, and quantify various alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes in serum samples.
    • 2. Nitric Oxide (NO) Pathway Probe 
      Homoarginine features a guanidino group similar to L-arginine. This allows it to serve as a secondary substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes. 
      • It is metabolized to produce nitric oxide, a critical vasodilator responsible for endothelial health, blood pressure regulation, and cardiovascular protection.

      3. Arginase and Transporter Modulator
