      Product Detail

Appearance: White needle-like or fibrous crystals, sometimes gray or brown; emits an odor resembling rotten eggs in moist air (due to the formation of H₂S)

Density: 1.853 g/cm³ (some sources cite 2.02 g/cm³, likely due to differences in crystal form)

Melting point / Sublimation point: Approx. 1090 °C (sublimes upon heating)

    Solubility:

Structure: Orthorhombic crystal system; chain-like structure composed of edge-sharing SiS₄ tetrahedra

    Stability:

Sensitive to moisture; decomposes in moist air

Flammable (burns in the presence of an open flame)

    🔬 Chemical Uses

Applications of silicon sulfide primarily lie in the fields of inorganic materials chemistry, silicon-sulfur chemistry, and the preparation of thiosilicates:

    1. Preparation of Thiosilicates
SiS₂ reacts with sulfides such as Na₂S, MgS, and Al₂S₃ to form various thiosilicates; it serves as a key precursor in inorganic sulfide chemistry.

    2. Precursor for Silane Compounds
Undergoes alcoholysis reactions with alcohols (e.g., ethanol, tert-butanol) to produce silicon alkoxides or sulfur-containing silanes, such as:

    Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)

    Tri-tert-butoxy-silanethiol

These products have application value in sol-gel materials, silicon oxide thin films, and functional silicon materials.

    Items Specifications

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
Silicon sulfide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula SiS2. It is a white fibrous orthorhombic or tetragonal crystal system, formed by the sublimation of amorphous silicon and sulfur after heating. Similar to silicon dioxide, this material is a polymer, but its one-dimensional structure is different from the usual form of silicon dioxide. Similar to other silicon sulfur compounds, Silicon sulfide (SiS2) is easily hydrolyzed in the air to produce H2S and SiO2. It is stable at room temperature and pressure, and burns when heated in the air. Its density is 1.853 g/cm3, melting point is 1090 ℃, and boiling point is 1130 ℃.
