Medetomidine Hydrochloride (CAS 86347-15-1) is a potent, highly selective α2-adrenoceptor agonist belonging to the imidazole class of compounds. It exists as a white to off-white crystalline powder and is soluble in water, DMSO, and methanol.

With a purity of ≥99.0% by HPLC, Medetomidine HCl demonstrates exceptional selectivity for α2-adrenoceptors with a Ki of 1.08 nM, exhibiting 1620-fold selectivity over α1-adrenoceptors (Ki = 1750 nM). This selectivity is significantly higher than that of clonidine (220-fold) and UK 14,304 (300-fold).

The compound exerts its pharmacological effects by mimicking the action of adrenergic neurotransmitters, influencing the adrenergic system through α2-receptor activation. It is a mixture of R and S isomers, with the S-form (dexmedetomidine hydrochloride) reported to be the active enantiomer
