Class:
Mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP), 16-amino-acid peptide
Status:Research compound — Not FDA approved
Mechanism:MOTS-c (mitochondrial ORF of the twelve S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by the mitochondrial genome (not nuclear DNA). It is a mitochondrial-derived peptide that regulates metabolic homeostasis by activating the AMPK/PGC-1\u03b1 pathway, improving insulin sensitivity, and enhancing exercise capacity. MOTS-c crosses the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to reduce body weight and improve glucose tolerance in preclinical models.
Activity note:MOTS-c does not act via a traditional receptor. It functions as a metabolic regulator, activating AMPK. Functional effects are observed at micromolar concentrations in cell-based assays.
