1. Physical Properties
At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent liquid with a distinctive aromatic odor similar to that of toluene. Its molecular formula is C₈H₁₀, and its molecular weight is 106.17. It is practically insoluble in water but is miscible in any proportion with most organic solvents, such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and chloroform, and is also soluble in petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride.
2. Chemical Properties
(1) It is generally stable and does not undergo polymerization under normal sealed storage conditions; it is classified as a low-toxicity, flammable aromatic hydrocarbon.
(2) It exhibits the electrophilic substitution reactivity typical of aromatic hydrocarbons; the benzene ring can undergo sulfonation, nitration, chlorination, and other reactions. Industrially, selective sulfonation is commonly used to separate and purify o-xylene from other xylene isomers.
(3) The two methyl groups on the side chain can undergo extensive catalytic oxidation; this is its most critical industrial reaction pathway. Upon oxidation, it forms phthalic anhydride, which serves as a basic raw material for a wide range of downstream chemical products.
3. Major Applications
(1) Core Chemical Raw Material: It is the primary raw material for the production of phthalic anhydride, which is a key basic component in the preparation of phthalate plasticizers, alkyd resins, and unsaturated polyesters, and is widely used in the plastics and coatings industries.
(2) Fine Chemicals Sector: It can be used to synthesize dye intermediates, agricultural insecticides, and certain pharmaceutical products (such as vitamin-related synthetic pathways), serving as a vital building block for fine organic synthesis.
(3) Specialty Additives: It is added to aviation gasoline as a high-octane component to enhance the fuel’s anti-knock properties and optimize the combustion stability of aviation fuel.
(4) Industrial Solvents: Thanks to its excellent dissolving power, it can be used as a specialized solvent in the coatings, resins, and adhesives industries, making it suitable for certain production scenarios that require high solvent dissolving power.

Grades and Specifications: Industrial grade.

The product strictly complies with the GB/T 2961-2014 national standard, accompanied by a complete set of MSDS, commodity inspection reports, and hazardous packaging certificates, and meets EU REACH import and export requirements. Standard packaging includes 200 kg galvanized closed-top steel drums and 1,000 L IBC containers. For large volumes, bulk transport via tank containers is available. Storing and transporting the product in a sealed, light-protected environment effectively delays oxidation and discoloration. Supply is stable and ample, supporting full-container and consolidated shipments for international trade, and meeting global chemical procurement and custom fine chemical production needs.
