    —— Product Detail ——

    Product Overview

Benzene sulfonyl chloride (benzenesulfonyl chloride) is an organosulfur compound with the molecular formula C₆H₅ClO₂S and a molecular weight of 176.62 g/mol. This colorless to pale yellow clear liquid is a valuable building block in organic synthesis, featuring a phenyl group attached to a sulfonyl chloride moiety. The compound is widely used as a reagent for the introduction of the benzenesulfonyl group into various substrates, particularly for the preparation of sulfonamides, sulfonates, and sulfonyl hydrazides. It is an important intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and dyes.

    Synthetic Process

Benzene sulfonyl chloride is synthesized through the following routes:

    • Chlorination of benzenesulfonic acid: Benzenesulfonic acid is reacted with phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride to form the sulfonyl chloride.

    • Purification: The crude product is purified by distillation under reduced pressure.

Mechanism of Action / Application Principles

    • Sulfonamide Synthesis: Reacts with amines to form sulfonamides, which are important pharmacophores.

    • Sulfonate Ester Synthesis: Reacts with alcohols to form sulfonate esters.

    • Protecting Group Chemistry: Used as a protecting group for amines and alcohols.
