1.Description

Bergenin, also known as dwarf catechin, is a needle shaped or crystalline powder extracted from the whole plant of Bergenia purpurscens   (Hook.f.et Thoms.)   Engl. in the family Saxifragaceae. Bergenin is a new variety in the 2015 Pharmacopoeia. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Yunnan, Xizang and other places. Harvesting in spring and autumn, washing away sediment, removing decayed leaves from roots, and drying in the sun.

2.Application

（1）Antitussive effect: Bergenin exerts its antitussive effect by inhibiting the cough center, thereby reducing the cough reflex. Its mechanism lies in selectively inhibiting the cough center without significantly enhancing the inhibition of other central nervous system functions, which is different from opioid-based central antitussive drugs.
