Product Overview

N-(Carbamoylmethyl) taurine (ACES, CAS 7365-82-4) is a zwitterionic biological buffer with the molecular formula C₄H₁₀N₂O₄S and a molecular weight of 182.20 g/mol. It is a white crystalline powder that is freely soluble in water. ACES is one of the Good's buffers, widely used in biochemical and biological research for maintaining pH in the range of 6.8-7.4. It has minimal metal ion binding and low UV absorbance, making it suitable for a variety of applications including enzyme assays and cell culture.

Synthetic Process

ACES is synthesized by the reaction of taurine with chloroacetamide or by the carbamoylmethylation of taurine under controlled conditions.

Mechanism of Action

As a zwitterionic buffer, ACES maintains stable pH through protonation and deprotonation without significant interference with biological systems.
