What is SS-31?

Elamipretide (SS-31) is a synthetic small peptide belonging to the Szeto-Schiller cell-penetrating peptide family. It selectively accumulates within the inner mitochondrial membrane. Inside mitochondria, SS-31 binds to cardiolipin, an essential phospholipid component of the inner mitochondrial membrane, and participates in the maintenance of mitochondrial structure and function.

A large body of laboratory research focuses on the effects of Elamipretide on mitochondrial function. Multiple experimental models are applied to explore its biological properties for further academic investigation.

In diabetes-related cell and animal models, SS-31 is studied for its correlation with mitochondrial dysfunction. Research using sepsis animal models indicates SS-31 may regulate vascular permeability via modulating oxidative stress pathways, which provides new directions for relevant laboratory exploration.
