Product Detail

The cyclohexane oxidation process was originally invented by an American company. It was licensed to IG Farben in Germany in 1941 and achieved industrial‑scale production in 1943.
Using benzene as the raw material, hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of a nickel catalyst to produce cyclohexane. Subsequently, cyclohexane is oxidized by air under the action of a cobalt catalyst at 140‑180 °C and 1‑2.5 MPa to yield a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone at a ratio of 60:40. Cyclohexanol is separated from the mixture and subjected to catalytic dehydrogenation to form cyclohexanone. The two streams of cyclohexanone are combined. At 110 °C, the combined cyclohexanone undergoes oximation reaction with hydroxylamine in sulfuric acid to generate cyclohexanone oxime. At 100 °C, cyclohexanone oxime undergoes Beckmann rearrangement in concentrated sulfuric acid to produce crude caprolactam. Sulfuric acid in the reaction mixture is neutralized with ammonia to form ammonium sulfate as a by‑product. The crude caprolactam is extracted with trichloroethylene, followed by vacuum rectification, concentration and recrystallization for purification.
If air oxidation is performed in the presence of boric acid in this process, the ratio of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone can reach 90:10.

CYCLOHEXANONE OXIME reacts violently with fuming sulfuric acid at temperatures > 302° F. (NTP, 1992). Several explosions or violent decompositions have occurred during distillation of aldoximes, which may be attributable to the formation of peroxides of various types. This is especially the case in the presence of acid, Chem. Eng. News, 1974, 52(35), 3. A nickel catalyzed aldoxime rearrangement to an amide, went out of control after changing the solvent employed, J. Loss Prev., 1993, 6(2), 69.
