    Uses and Synthesis
    Brief Introduction
Sulfolane is a polar solvent featuring high dissolving capacity for aromatic hydrocarbons, favorable selectivity, good thermal stability, low vapor pressure and non‑corrosive performance towards carbon steel. It is widely adopted for aromatic hydrocarbon extraction across global industrial processes.
    Chemical Properties
It appears as colorless solid at ambient temperature, and melts into clear colorless liquid at 27‑28 °C. Miscible with water, mixed xylenes, methyl mercaptan and ethyl mercaptan. It is also soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohols.
    Applications
It can be applied as stationary phase for gas‑liquid chromatography as well as analytical reagent, and utilized in organic synthesis.
As a polar solvent with strong solvency and good selectivity, sulfolane dissolves or mixes with most organic compounds and polymers. It is widely used as extractant for aromatic hydrocarbon extraction, solvent for polymer spinning and film casting, purification medium for natural gas, synthesis gas and refinery gas. It can also serve as processing solvent for rubber and plastics. Additionally, it can be used as textile printing‑and‑dyeing auxiliary.
It is used for desulfurization of natural gas, aromatic hydrocarbon extraction from reformate oil, removal of impurities such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfur from hydrogen gas.
It is a high‑efficiency multi‑purpose solvent. As gas‑chromatography stationary phase (maximum operating te mperature:100 ℃, solvent: acetone), it is used for separation and analysis of low‑grade hydrocarbon isomers. It acts as selective solvent in gas‑liquid extraction to recover aromatic hydrocarbons from aliphatic hydrocarbons and remove acid gases from gas mixtures.
    Production Method
Using butadiene and sulfur dioxide as raw materials, the reaction proceeds in pressure‑resistant reactor at 100‑110 ℃ with hydroquinone dissolved in methanol solvent to produce sulfolene methanol solution. After fractionation, purified sulfolene undergoes hydrogenation over nickel‑containing catalyst to yield sulfolane. Final product is obtained through gas‑liquid separation and further fractionation.
    Raw material consumption quota: butadiene (>99%) 654 kg/t; sulfur dioxide (>97%) 909 kg/t; Al‑Ni catalyst (Ni 45‑50%) 71 kg/t; liquid sodium hydroxide 110 kg/t.

Sulfolane is a colorless oily liquid with a weak oily odor. Solidifies (freezing point is 79° F) and sinks on first contact with water, then mixes with water. (USCG, 1999)|Sulfolane is a member of the class of tetrahydrothiophenes that is tetrahydrothiophene in which the sulfur has been oxidised to give the corresponding sulfone. A colourless, high-boiling (285℃) liquid that is miscible with both water and hydrocarbons, it is used as an industrial solvent, particularly for the purification of hydrocarbon mixtures by liquid-vapour extraction. It has a role as a polar aprotic solvent. It is a sulfone and a member of tetrahydrothiophenes. It derives from a hydride of a tetrahydrothiophene.
