Glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide composed of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine, is found in nearly all living cells, with particularly high concentrations in the liver. As the body's most vital and potent endogenous antioxidant, it is often likened to a cellular' environmental guardian 'that eliminates oxidative waste (such as free radicals) generated during metabolism and maintains the cell's redox balance.
Glutathione contains active thiol (-SH) groups, which are key functional groups that readily bind with toxins and drugs to form two forms: the reduced form (G-SH) and the oxidized form (G-S-S-G). Under physiological conditions, the reduced form predominates. It is primarily synthesized through the body's own metabolic processes rather than relying on external intake (such as food or supplements), making its levels a reflection of the cell's self-repair and detoxification capacity.
Glutathione directly neutralizes free radicals, slows cellular aging, and regenerates vitamins C and E to extend their effectiveness. In the liver, it participates in metabolic processes by binding with drugs, alcohol, heavy metals (e.g., lead, mercury), and harmful compounds, converting them into harmless substances for excretion. It helps maintain normal immune system function by regulating cytokines and signaling pathways to support immune cell activity. Additionally, it protects mitochondria (the body's energy factories) from oxidative damage and maintains normal metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

    Product Application

    • Antioxidant Industry: Glutathione is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry due to its antioxidant properties. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Glutathione also plays a crucial role in detoxification processes within the body.

Cosmetics Industry: Glutathione is used in the cosmetics industry for its skin-lightening and anti-aging properties. It inhibits the production of melanin, which helps in reducing skin pigmentation and achieving a brighter complexion. Glutathione also helps in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Food Industry: Glutathione is used as a food additive in the food industry. It acts as a flavor enhancer and preservative, helping to maintain the quality and freshness of food products. Glutathione also plays a role in preventing the browning of fruits and vegetables.

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
L-Glutathione reduced (GSH; γ-L-Glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine) is an endogenous antioxidant and is capable of scavenging oxygen-derived free radicals.
    Solid
Glutathione is a tripeptide compound consisting of glutamic acid attached via its side chain to the N-terminus of cysteinylglycine. It has a role as a skin lightening agent, a human metabolite, an Escherichia coli metabolite, a mouse metabolite, an antioxidant and a cofactor. It is a tripeptide, a thiol and a L-cysteine derivative. It is a conjugate acid of a glutathionate(1-).|A tripeptide with many roles in cells. It conjugates to drugs to make them more soluble for excretion, is a cofactor for some enzymes, is involved in protein disulfide bond rearrangement and reduces peroxides.|Glutathione is a tripeptide comprised of three amino acids (cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine) present in most mammalian tissue. Glutathione acts as an antioxidant, a free radical scavenger and a detoxifying agent. Glutathione is also important as a cofactor for the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, in the uptake of amino acids, and in the synthesis of leukotrienes. As a substrate for glutathione S-transferase, this agent reacts with a number of harmful chemical species, such as halides, epoxides and free radicals, to form harmless inactive products. In erythrocytes, these reactions prevent oxidative damage through the reduction of methemoglobin and peroxides. Glutathione is also involved in the formation and maintenance of disulfide bonds in proteins and in the transport of amino acids across cell membranes.
