It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder with the molecular formula C₁₃H₁₇ClN₂ and a molecular weight of 236.74 g/mol .

Medetomidine is the racemate of dexmedetomidine, containing both the active (S)-enantiomer and the inactive (R)-enantiomer (levomedetomidine) . It is widely used in veterinary medicine for its sedative and analgesic properties and serves as the precursor for the production of the human pharmaceutical dexmedetomidine
