Description

Synthesis Method

Monobenzone is synthesized with hydroquinone, sodium hydroxide and benzyl chloride as raw materials, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent under microwave irradiation. The optimal synthesis conditions are confirmed via single-factor experiments.

Optimum Process Parameters: The molar ratio of benzyl chloride, hydroquinone and sodium hydroxide is 1:1.4:1.4, with 15 mL of DMF solvent, microwave irradiation power of 320 W and irradiation time of 60 s. The product yield reaches 63.79% under this condition.

Experimental Operation Steps: Add 2.63 g (0.028 mol) of hydroquinone and 1.12 g (0.028 mol) of sodium hydroxide into a 100 mL conical flask with 8 mL of water. After sodium hydroxide is completely dissolved and mixed evenly, add 15 mL of DMF and 2.52 g (0.02 mol) of benzyl chloride. Conduct reaction under 320 W microwave irradiation for 60 seconds, then cool the mixture to room temperature.

Adjust the solution to alkaline with 10% sodium hydroxide solution, then perform suction filtration. Wash the filter cake (recoverable hydroquinone dibenzyl ether) with 10% sodium hydroxide solution until the filtrate is colorless. Acidify the filtrate with hydrochloric acid to precipitate monobenzone completely. After suction filtration and ice water washing, purify the product via alcohol-water recrystallization and activated carbon decolorization to obtain white solid finished product.

Chemical Properties

The product appears as off-white crystalline powder with stable basic chemical properties under normal temperature and pressure.
