    Description

Azelaic acid, also known as nonanedioic acid, is a naturally occurring nine-carbon saturated dicarboxylic acid with CAS number 123-99-9, molecular formula C₉H₁₆O₄ and molecular weight 188.22. It appears as white to slightly yellow crystalline powder at room temperature. Featuring mild properties and high safety, it is a well-established classic ingredient widely used in the field of dermatology, and extensively applied in cosmetics and topical medicines. This product is a high-purity (≥99%) raw material powder, available in multiple grades including cosmetic grade, pharmaceutical grade and industrial grade, allowing formulators to flexibly incorporate it into various formulations.

    Key Benefits

Azelaic acid has a mild and diverse mechanism of action, integrating "conditioning, soothing and evening skin tone". It can inhibit microorganisms such as Propionibacterium acnes related to acne formation, reduce skin inflammatory responses, and help regulate keratin metabolism and unclog pores. In addition, it inhibits tyrosinase activity and reduces pigmentation, thereby brightening the skin and fading acne marks and spots. It is one of the rare ingredients that can address both acne control and skin tone evening. Compared with some acid ingredients, it has lower irritation and is suitable for a wide range of skin types.

Specifically, its functions in skincare formulations include:
Acne conditioning: Inhibits microorganisms including Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis to reduce acne breakouts, ideal for formulas for oily and acne-prone skin.
Soothing and anti-inflammatory: Alleviates skin inflammatory reactions and relieves redness and discomfort.
Pore unclogging: Regulates keratin metabolism to improve comedones, closed comedones and pore blockages.
Evening and brightening: Inhibits tyrosinase activity, fades acne marks, pigmented spots and pigmentation to even out and brighten skin tone.
Mild and skin-friendly: Less irritating than other acid ingredients, and gentle on most skin types at appropriate formulation concentrations.

    Applications

Azelaic acid is applied across three major fields: cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and industry. In the cosmetics industry, it is a popular active ingredient in acne-clearing and brightening products, widely formulated into serums, gels, lotions and other preparations. In the pharmaceutical sector, it serves as one of the core ingredients in topical preparations for mild to moderate acne and rosacea. In the industrial field, it acts as an important dicarboxylic acid raw material for the production of polymer materials and fine chemicals.

    Specific application scenarios include:
Acne skincare products: Incorporated into cosmetic formulations for oily and acne-prone skin, such as cleansers, serums, gels, lotions and creams.
Skin brightening and evening products: Used in serums and creams to fade acne marks, pigmentation and even out skin tone.
Topical formulation development: Used as a raw material for developing topical medicines targeting mild to moderate acne and rosacea.
Industrial chemistry: Applied in the synthetic production of plasticizers, polyesters, nylons, lubricants and other products.
Scientific research experiments: Utilized in laboratory studies and analytical tests related to antibacterial effects and skin metabolism.

Nonanedioic acid is an alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acid that is heptane substituted at positions 1 and 7 by carboxy groups. It has a role as an antibacterial agent, an antineoplastic agent, a dermatologic drug and a plant metabolite. It is a lipid and an alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acid. It is a conjugate acid of an azelaate(2-) and an azelaate.|Azelaic acid is a saturated dicarboxylic acid found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley. It is also produced by Malassezia furfur, also known as Pityrosporum ovale, which is a species of fungus that is normally found on human skin. Azelaic acid is effective against a number of skin conditions, such as mild to moderate acne, when applied topically in a cream formulation of 20%. It works in part by stopping the growth of skin bacteria that cause acne, and by keeping skin pores clear. Azelaic acid's antimicrobial action may be attributable to inhibition of microbial cellular protein synthesis.|The physiologic effect of azelaic acid is by means of Decreased Protein Synthesis, and Decreased Sebaceous Gland Activity.|Azelaic Acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid produced by Malassezia furfur and found in whole grain cereals, rye, barley and animal products. Azelaic acid possesses antibacterial, keratolytic, comedolytic, and anti-oxidant activity. Azelaic acid is bactericidal against Proprionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis due to its inhibitory effect on the synthesis of microbial cellular proteins. Azelaic acid exerts its keratolytic and comedolytic effects by reducing the thickness of the stratum corneum and decreasing the number of keratohyalin granules by reducing the amount and distribution of filaggrin in epidermal layers. Azelaic acid also possesses a direct anti-inflammatory effect due to its scavenger activity of free oxygen radical. This drug is used topically to reduce inflammation associated with acne and rosacea.
