Introduction:

It is a cardiolipin peroxidase inhibitor and a mitochondrial targeting peptide.

Application:

It is a small molecule peptide composed of four amino acids, targeting the inner membrane of mitochondria in vivo, which can prevent oxidative damage to nerve cells and other cell types; Prevent mitochondrial depolarization, reduce pancreatic cell apoptosis, increase pancreatic cell production, and improve post transplant function.

FUNCTION:

Ilameptide is a novel mitochondrial-targeted tetrapeptide compound. Its pharmacological properties lie in stabilizing the mitochondrial inner membrane structure by specifically binding to cardiolipin, improving the function of the electron transport chain and reducing the production of reactive oxygen species. This drug maintains the energy homeostasis of cells under pathological conditions by enhancing the efficiency of mitochondrial energy metabolism, while inhibiting the abnormal opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores and reducing the activation of apoptotic signals. Ilameptide is administered by subcutaneous and has good bioavailability, capable of rapidly distributing to mitochondrial-rich tissues such as myocardial and skeletal muscles. Its unique advantage lies in providing the first etiology-oriented treatment option for primary mitochondrial diseases. By directly improving mitochondrial function rather than merely treating the symptoms, it represents a shift in the treatment paradigm of metabolic diseases.

Activity note:

SS-31 does not act via traditional receptor agonism. It binds cardiolipin with high selectivity in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Functional EC₅₀ values are context-dependent (cell type, stress model). Key electrophysiology studies report mitochondrial membrane potential restoration at nanomolar concentrations.
