Toxicity

IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Zirconium disulfate forms white crystals. it is used in the preparation of nickel catalyst for the hydrogenation of vegetable oil; used for flame-resistant treatment of wool fabric; as a chemical reagent, in lubricants, and tanning of leather. Zirconium sulfate has been identified as being used in hydraulic fracturing as a crosslinker. HUMAN EXPOSURE AND TOXICITY: No human studies were found at time of review. ANIMAL STUDIES: Oral administration of zirconium (fed as 5 ppm zirconium sulfate) to rats from weaning until natural death failed to influence longevity, tumor incidence, or organ-to-body-weight ratios. Intracellular concentration sites of zirconium after injection of low doses of zirconium sulfate have been studied. Results show that zirconium is uniquely localized in the lysosomes of the lymph node macrophages where it is associated with phosphorus. At defined concentrations Zr(SO4)2 can both act as lymphocyte mitogens and augment the functional responsiveness of immune cells.

After exposing several hundred Long-Evans rats to drinking water containing 5 ppm zirconium sulfate for a lifetime, ... no analytical evidence /was found/ by a spectrophotometric method using chloranilic acid that zirconium was consistently absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; indeed, the zirconium concentration in the male rat kidney was less than that of controls whose diet, like that of the treated, contained 2.66 ppm zirconium. The liver and the lung showed a slight increase of 0.7 and 1%, however, over that of controls, but the heart and spleen showed increases of 9.4 and 32%, with an average deposition in the five tissues of 9.9%. Females, with an average tissue distribution of only 2.6%, showed the striking difference of 2.4% less zirconium in the spleen than in the controls.

Zirconium sulfate solutions can be generated by the action of strong sulfuric acid on hydrous zirconium oxide, zirconium oxide, zirconium carbonitride, zirconium metal, or basic zirconium sulfate. /Zirconium sulfate solutions/|Action of sulfuric acid on zirconium hydroxide.|Baddeleyite is converted to zirconium sulfate by direct dissolution in concentrated sulfuric acid at ca. 200 °C. The recovery is low. Better recoveries are obtained by first heating the baddeleyite with lime to yield calcium zirconate, which reacts with sulfuric acid to give zirconium sulfate and gypsum.

Light absorbance of barium sulfate suspension is measured by a photometer at 420 nm and the sulfate ion concentration is determined by comparison of the reading with a standard curve. This method is applicable in the range of 1 to 40 mg sulfate ion/1. The minimum detectable concentration is 1 mg SO4/l. Interferences /include/ suspended matter in large amounts, silica in excess of 500 mg/l and large quantities of organic material. With a turbidimeter, in a single laboratory with a sample having a mean of 7.45 mg sulfate ion/l, a standard deviation of 0.13 mg/l and a coefficient of variation of 1.7% were obtained. Two samples dosed with sulfate gave recoveries of 85 and 91%. /Sulfate/|Method 4500-sulfate ion F. Automated Methylthymol Blue Method for the determination of sulfate ions in water and wastewater. Barium sulfate is formed by the reaction of the sulfate ion with barium chloride at a low pH. At high pH, excess barium reacts with methylthymol blue to produce a blue chelate. The uncomplexed methylthymol blue is gray. The amount of gray uncomplexed methylthymol blue indicates the concentration of sulfate ion. To remove interferences from cations, an ion-exchange column is used. This method is applicable over a range of 10 to 300 mg sulfate ion/l. In a single laboratory a sample with an average concentration of about 28 mg sulfate/l had a standard deviation of 0.68 mg/l and a coefficient of variation of 2.4%. In two samples with added sulfate, recoveries were 91% and 100%. /Sulfate/
