LARGE FIRE: Flood fire area with water from a distance. Do not move cargo or vehicle if cargo has been exposed to heat. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. Drug Information
Inhalation or contact with eyes or skin causes irritation. Ingestion causes excessive salivation, vomiting, colic, diarrhea, convulsive tremors, slow, hard pulse, and elevated blood pressure; hemorrhages may occur in the stomach, intestines, and kidneys; muscular paralysis may follow. (USCG, 1999)
Get medical attention. Alert doctor to possibility of barium poisoning, particularly if compound was swallowed. INHALATION: remove to fresh air. EYES: flush with water for at least 15 min. SKIN: flush with water. INGESTION: oral administration of an aqueous 10% solution of magnesium or sodium sulfate; for severe intoxication, calcium or a magnesium salt may have to be given I.V. with caution; treatment otherwise is supportive and symptomatic. In the double decomposition method, the sodium perchlorate solution is fed into the reactor, barium chloride is added to carry out the double decomposition reaction, barium perchlorate and sodium chloride are generated, the sodium chloride is removed by filtration, the filtrate is evaporated and concentrated, cooled and crystallized, and then refined. After filtering, the filtrate is cooled and crystallized, centrifuged, and dried to obtain barium perchlorate. 2NaC1O4+BaC12·2H2O+H2O→Ba(C1O4)2·3H2O+2NaCl
Used as desiccant and dehydrating agent.
