Lead fluoborate itself does not burn. Use any agent suitable for type of surrounding fire ... Containers may explode in fire. Storage containers and parts of containers may rocket great distances, in many directions. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated waters. Notify local health and fire officials and pollution contol agencies. From a secure, explosion-proof location, use water spray to cool exposed containers. If cooling streams are ineffective (venting sound increases in volume and pitch, tank discolors or shows any signs of deforming), withdraw immediately to a secure position.|Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus when fighting fires involving this material.

Evacuate and restrict persons not wearing protective equipment from area of spill or leak until cleanup is complete. Remove all ignition sources. NIOSH (NOES Survey 1981-1983) has statistically estimated that 6369 workers (1307 of these were female) were potentially exposed to lead fluoroborate in the US(1).|Ceramic artists can be exposed to many hazardous materials, generally related to dry clays, glazes and kiln use. Glazes can contain lead, antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, boron, chromium, cobalt, cadmium, copper, vanadium and other materials which all have potential toxic effects.

Drug Information

Early symptoms of lead intoxication via inhalation or ingestion are most commonly gastrointestinal disorders, colic, constipation, etc.; weakness, which may go on to paralysis, chiefly of the extensor muscles of the wrists and less often of the ankles, is noticeable in the most serious cases. Ingestion of a large amount causes local irritation of the alimentary tract; pain, leg cramps, muscle weakness, paresthesias, depression, coma, and death may follow in 1 or 2 days. Contact with eyes or skin may cause burns and/or irritation. (USCG, 1999)|Carcinogens

Remove at once all cases of lead intoxication from further exposure until the blood level is reduced to a safe value; immediately place the individual under medical care. INGESTION: give gastric lavage using 1% solution of sodium or magnesium sulfate; leave 15-30 gm magnesium sulfate in 6-8 oz. of water in the stomach as antidote and cathartic; egg white, milk, and tannin are useful demulcents; atropine sulfate and other antispasmodics may relieve abdominal pain, but morphine may be necessary. EYES: flush with copious quantities of water for 15 min. SKIN: wash area with soap and water; treat as an acid burn. (USCG, 1999)

If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration. Keep patient quiet and maintain normal body temperature. In the chemical method, the prepared fluoroboric acid is first placed in the reactor, and then lead oxide is slowly added under stirring, and then insoluble impurities are removed by filtration to obtain the finished lead fluoroborate. 2HBF4+PbO→Pb(BF4)2+H2O

Uses

Used for lead-tin alloy plating and low temperature soldering of printed circuits. Also used as analytical reagent. It is also used for electroplating, and can be used as the coating of tin and lead alloys on circuit boards.
