Description
Cuprous sulfide, with the chemical formula of Cu2S, has a CAS number of [22205-45-4] and a molecular weight of 159.15. This compound exists in nature as the blue or grey mineral chalcocite with a mineral number of [21112-20-9]. It is worth noting that cuprous sulfide, also known as copper mirrorstone, has extremely high stability and does not dissolve in common solvents such as water. However, it can decompose under specific chemical conditions, such as nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid. There are many efficient and diverse methods for the preparation of cuprous sulfide. One common method is to heat a mixture of copper and sulfur in a hydrogen atmosphere, allowing the two to react under specific conditions to produce the desired compound. Another method for preparation is through precipitation, in which copper(II) imine salts are introduced to a solution of hydrogen sulfide or alkali thiosulfate to generate the target product.
