Drug Information

Purifying or cleansing agents, usually salts of long-chain aliphatic bases or acids, that exert cleansing (oil-dissolving) and antimicrobial effects through a surface action that depends on possessing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. (See all compounds classified as Detergents.)|Agents that modify interfacial tension of water; usually substances that have one lipophilic and one hydrophilic group in the molecule; includes soaps, detergents, emulsifiers, dispersing and wetting agents, and several groups of antiseptics. (See all compounds classified as Surface-Active Agents.)

Drug Function and Efficacy

Loxamic acid is a mast cell stabilizer. It inhibits type I rapid allergic reactions by inhibiting mast cell degranulation and reducing the permeability of target cell membranes to calcium ions, thereby preventing bronchospasm and decreased lung function caused by allergens. It can also inhibit the increase in skin vascular permeability caused by reagin, IgE and antigen-mediated reactions. When this drug is used for eye drops, it can produce the same reaction to the conjunctival vessels of the palpebral region and is used to treat allergic eye diseases. In vitro tests have confirmed that this drug prevents the release of histamine caused by specific antigens, and can also prevent the release of mast cells and other inflammatory mediators (such as SRS-A, i.e., the slow-reacting substance of allergic reactions, i.e., peptide-leukotrienes). Loxamic acid can also prevent the transfer of calcium ions into mast cells after stimulation, thereby inhibiting the release of histamine and inhibiting the chemotaxis of eosinophils. Generally, the therapeutic effect is obvious after 7 days of medication, and the symptoms can be controlled after 14-21 days of medication. If the treatment is continued, the condition will be further improved.
