Methods of Manufacturing

Dimethyl sulfoxide (2 mL, 28.2 mmol) and methyl iodide (1.75 mL, 28.1 mmol) were stirred in a pressure vessel, at 70 °C for 48 hrs. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washing with CHClTo a 500mL round bottom flask, 156g (2mol) of DMSO and 142g (1mol) of methyl iodide were added. The reaction was placed in a high performance refluxing device and reacted for 3 days. After completion of the reaction, the reaction was cooled, filtered, crystallized with water twice to obtain trimethylsulfoxide iodide salt, which is white crystal solid, 130g, yield: about 60percent, mp: 203°C (sublimation).To a 500 mL round bottom flask, 156 g (2 mol) of DMSO and 142 g (1 mol) of methyl iodide were added.

Uses

Trimethylsulfoxonium iodide is a sulfoxonium salt.It is used to generate dimethyloxosulfonium methylide by reaction with sodium hydride.The latter compound is used as a methylene-transfer reagent, and is used to prepare epoxides.
