Step 2: To a solution of the isolated nitrile (3.1 g, 13.0 mmol) in ethylene glycol (22 mL) was added water (0.5 mL), hydrazine monohydrate (1.5 mL) and potassium hydroxide (3.34 g). The reaction mixture was heated to 195 °C until analysis by LCMS indicated complete reaction, after which it was allowed to cool to room temperature, diluted with water and acidifed to pH ~2 with 2N HCl.
