Compound 3 (2.0 g, 9.0 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (40 mL) and water (40 mL)Potassium hydroxide (2.0 g, 36.0 mmol) was then added and stirred overnight at room temperature.TLC (petroleum ether / ethyl acetate volume ratio = 1/1, Rf = 0.0) indicated that the reaction was complete, then most of the ethanol was concentrated in vacuo, then the pH was adjusted to 3-4 with 1N hydrochloric acid and the aqueous phase extracted with dichloromethane The combined organics were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to dryness to give compound 4 (1.3 g) in 62percent yield.
