4-BROMO-4'-CHLOROBIPHENYL Use and Manufacturing
A solution of 4-chlorobiphenyl (3.0 g, 15.9 mmol) in acetic acid (50 mL) was carefully treated with bromine (1.1 mL, 20.7 mmol) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 4 h, cooled to room temperature and treated with excess propene until the mixture became clear. The solution was concentrated to a thick slurry, diluted with CH2Cl2 (50 mL) and washed successively with water and 2N NaOH. The organic extract was dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated. Purification by re-crystallization form EtOAc gave the aryl bromide (3.57g, 84percent) as a white crystalline solid. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.57 (m, 2H), 7.48 (m, 2H), 7.41 (m, 4H).
