To a stirring solution of 94 (57 g, 0.29 mol) in EtOH (120 mL) was added 12 percent aqueous KOH (300 mL) and the reaction mixture was heated to 100 °C for 3 h. The reaction mixture was then cooled and acidified with HC1 to pH 5. The resulting yellow solid was filtered, washed water and air-dried. The resulting carboxylic acid was then suspended in hexane, stirred for 5 min, then the hexane was decanted off. The hexane wash was repeated, the resulting solids were filtered and washed with hexane to afford 95 (45 g, 72percent) as a white solid.Step 2: 3-Chloro-4-isopropoxybenzoic acid (34). To a stirring solution of 33 (57 g, 291 mmol) in EtOH (120 mL) was added 12percent aqueous KOH solution (300 mL ) and the reaction mixture was heated to 100 °C for 3 h. The reaction mixture was then cooled and acidified with HC1 to pH 5. A yellow solid precipitated out which was filtered, washed with water and dried. The resulting solid was stirred with hexane for 5 min and the hexane decanted. The resulting solid was resuspended in hexane, filtered, and washed with hexane to afford 34 as a white solid (45 g, 72percent).[00177] To a solution of 4-isopropoxylbenzoic acid 1.1 (25 g, 140 mmol) in DMF(15OmL) was added NCS (24 g, 182 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred overnight. HTo a solution of 4-isopropoxylbenzoic acid 3.1 (25 g, 140 mmol) in DMF ( 150 mL) was added NCS (24 g, 182 mmol).
