Description

Chromium chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CrCl6 and a molecular weight of 264.71400. It is a compound known as an oxidant and inorganic chemical reagent. This dark green solid is highly soluble in water, ether and ethanol, forming various hydrate forms. It is mainly used to make chromium salts, mordants, chrome plating, pigments, catalysts, etc. Chromium chloride has been confirmed as a human carcinogen and releases toxic Cr and Cl− vapors when heated and decomposed.

Uses

Chromium chloride is widely used in organic synthesis, especially for the preparation of chromium complexes and as a catalyst in organic reactions. It is also used in industrial processes such as dyeing, textile printing and electroplating. In addition, chromium chloride can also be used in the determination of reducing agents in analytical chemistry and the synthesis of other chromium compounds. Specifically, chromium chloride can be used in textile dyes and pigments, such as the production of ammonium dichromate, potassium chromate, sodium chromate, as well as in coatings, inks and plastics, such as the production of lead chromate, zinc chromate, barium chromate, calcium chromate, potassium dichromate, sodium chromate; in the production of corrosion inhibitors, such as chromium trioxide, zinc chromate, barium chromate, calcium chromate, sodium chromate, strontium chromate; in the production of wood preservatives, such as chromium trioxide; in the production of metal surface treatment and chrome plating, such as chromium trioxide, strontium chromate; and in the production of leather tanning, such as ammonium dichromate.
