5-CHLORO-3-IODO-2-METHYLANILINE Use and Manufacturing

A mixture of 5-chloro-l-iodo-2-methyl-3-nitrobenzene (3.0 g, 10.1 mmol) and tin(II) chloride dihydrate (9.1 g, 40.4 mmol) in acetic acid (10 mL) was stirred for 1 h at room temperature, and was then diluted with ether. The mixture was cooled to 0 °C and 50percent aqueous sodium hydroxide was added slowly. A clumpy white solid formed, and was removed by filtration. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue purified by column chromatography on silica (hexane: ethyl acetate 4: 1) to provide 5-chloro-3-iodo-2- methylaniline (1.81 g, 67percent yield) as a pale yellow solid.
